Written by Published in Artist, Blog Post, Curator, Interview, News, Voices Now Blog

Explorer of the human voice, compassionate and inspiring teacher, a cappella journeyman, Tobias Hug has been singing, teaching, travelling for 20 years and is deeply involved with the international choral, beatbox and a cappella scene.

He currently performs with his group Beatvox and the The Beatbox Collective (current World Beatbox Team Champions). With the choir London Voices he contributes to soundtracks of movies (Star Wars, The Hobbit, Interstellar) and computer games (World of Warcraft, etc). His arrangement of ‘A Fifth of Beethoven’ was featured in the pilot episode of ‘Glee’.

For 11 years, Tobias was bass, beatboxer and Artistic Director for the Grammy-Award winning A cappella group The Swingle Singers, performing more than 700 concerts collaborating with artists like Zubin Mehta, Jamie Cullum, Katia Labeque and Bobby McFerrin.

Education is a big part of Tobias’ work – he holds a Master in Vocal Leadership and Rhythmic Choir Conducting at the Royal Academy of Aarhus/Aalborg and his education as well as charity work has led him to work with children all over the world from Romania to Kenya from Singapore to Brazil .

As Artistic Director, Tobias has been involved with a number of a cappella festivals and organisations, starting and curating events in London (LACF), Italy (Vocalmente) and co-founding the European Voices Association.

It’s wonderful to work with such an eclectic range of choirs from all over the UK, get to know them and challenge them with repertoire that they otherwise would not have tackled, create collaborations between the choirs themselves – really make connections through music!

It’s equally exciting to work with team of incredible artists to create these nights as well as the Voices Now team. This will be my first time to work at the Roundhouse – and I am looking forward to creating something really special in my favourite London venue!
